How Do We Explain Life?

Yesterday, while I was sitting on my computer and phone at Bank Of America on Seagler and Westehimer when a police officer pulled over a Blue Dodge Durango. I thought nothing of it until the officers jumped out the squad car with guns drawn on came up on each side of the car. All passengers were asked to get out and handcuffed. Another 2 squad cars pulled up. A security guard on a golf cart from a business nearby was in ear shot. I sat watching the scene take place and trying to figure out what was happening.

Thankfully I did not have Mitchell with me. But we did come home to find a police officer at the house due to a break in in 2010 and I had to explain to my then 4 year old why someone had stolen some of our things and how the police were working to keep us safe. It was a tough couple of days.

HOW DID I DO IT?
1. No matter what as the parent you need to remain calm.
2. Let your children ask questions.
3. Allow them to ask law enforcement questions if at all possible. This went a long way in easing Mitchell's fears.
4. Explain the difference between good and bad guys.
5. I also added the biblical slant----Jesus was not in the robbers heart
6. It is also important to explain that you as parents are so glad your children aren't hurt, because they cannot be replaced.
7. If you feel safe stay where you are and work hard to make your children feel safe.
8. If you do not feel safe let your children know that as well and tell them why you are staying away from home.
9. Only give your children as much as their age can handle.
10. Explain the importance of law enforcement, and other rescue workers.

These are not absolutes but guides. Our children are young, inexperienced and our responsibility. It is our job to take care of them well. Its OK to begin having conversations about life. You don't want them so sheltered that they are not able to cope in difficult situations. Enjoy your children at every stage. Feel free to leave a comment and until our next hot date...........
